It seems like everyone wants lush, full brows these days—but sometimes that’s easier said than done. Add to that the fact that you still may be dealing with some sparse spots leftover from that infamous over-tweezing incident of 2002, and scoring said bushy brows can be more challenging than ever. While filling in your brows with pencils, pomades, and powders is a good solution, and semi-permanent tattoo techniques, like microblading, are designed to give the effect of fuller brows, there are now plenty of over-the-counter brow serums that can deliver long-term improvement. “The latest non-prescription brow serums are designed to enhance the thickness of the brow hairs you do have and help stimulate growth in areas that are sparse,” explains Gretchen Friese, a trichologist and BosleyMD stylist. As with any beauty treatment that requires consistency to produce visible results, note that brow growth serums take time to work. "Results depend on the formula, application, and the individual, but results can start in a month, with most products working within three months to sync with the hair growth cycle phase," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Nazanin Saedi, MD. That being said, you should start to see at least some improvement as quickly as a few weeks, given that the growth cycle of your brow hairs is shorter than for the hair on your head, notes hair health and scalp expert Shab Caspara, an advisor for HairClub. We conducted hours of research on the best eyebrow growth serums, evaluating each formula on active growth ingredients with proven clinical results, like amino acids and biotin. We also considered how long each serum takes to start working and, of course, what those results actually were. After considering dozens of formulas and consulting trichologists and hair growth experts like Friese, Saedi, and Caspara, along with brow architects Azi Sacks, Damone Roberts, and Dani Kimiko Vincent, we landed on these top-rated picks. Our Top Picks Best Overall: Best Drugstore: Best Fast-Acting Formula: Grande Cosmetics GrandeBROW Brow Enhancing Serum at Amazon ($73) Best for Sensitive Skin: Pronexa Hairgenics Lavish Lash Serum by Hairgenics at Amazon ($20) Best Conditioning: Best With Biotin: Best Natural: Best Multitasker: In This Article Our Picks Where We Stand How We Researched What To Look For FAQ Why Trust Byrdie What We Like Expert recommended Doe-foot applicator for easy application Great coverage What We Don't Like Has to be used twice daily Both Friese and Caspara recommend this pick, as does brow expert Azi Sacks. “The formula contains zinc and biotin, both of which are essential for healthy hair follicles,” says Friese, who also lauds it for being vegan and cruelty-free and notes that you can start to see results in as little as 30 days. Caspara agrees and calls it her “go-to brow product,” while Sacks notes that results last even after you stop using it. Explore this option if you are someone who might not be as diligent with daily application as others since this powerful serum keeps working even on days you forget to apply it. Bonus: Its plant-based formula is safe for vegans and anyone who is nursing or pregnant. Active Ingredients: Zinc, biotin | Size: 3 milliliters | Dosage: Twice daily for two months, then daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Works on lashes and brows Prevents hair breakage Vegan and cruelty-free What We Don't Like Plastic applicator feels rough Despite the category's popularity, this pick remains one of the few brow serums you can get at the drugstore, making it all the more noteworthy. Biotin, peptides, and castor oil help to thicken, strengthen, and add fullness to both lashes and brows; the spoolie brush applicator makes it equally easy to brush onto both. Also nice: It only needs to be used once daily. We love this for a savvy shopper who knows a good deal when they see one—and is looking for the best brow growth serum at the drugstore. PS: If you’re looking to lengthen your lashes while filling in sparse brow hairs, this is the serum for you. Active Ingredients: Biotin, peptides, castor oil | Size: 13.1 milliliters | Dosage: Once daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Expert recommended Promises to work quickly Non-drying What We Don't Like Bottle doesn't last through 4 months “I like that this works quickly, usually within six to eight weeks,” says Friese, who adds that it’s also easy to apply. A combo of vitamins, antioxidants (from botanicals such as ginseng root, chamomile flower, and bearberry leaves), hyaluronic acid, and amino acids work to enhance sparse spots and overall leave brows looking fuller and bolder. Celebrity brow artist and founder of Kimiko Beauty, Dani Kimiko Vincent, also recommends GrandeBrow to her clients who are not pregnant or breastfeeding. “I really like the finer brush because it can target sparse areas accurately,” she shares. If you want to see results quickly or address thinner patches and overall fullness, give this pick a try. Frequent fliers will also appreciate Grande’s travel-size tube. Active Ingredients: Amino acid, hyaluronic acid, glycosaminoglycans | Size: 3 milliliters | Dosage: Once daily | Cruelty-Free:Yes What We Like Good for sensitive skin The formula penetrates hair follicles Clinically tested What We Don't Like Takes more time than others to work Dermatologist-tested and formulated with botanically-derived ingredients, this is a choice for those with allergies, sensitivities, or contact lens wearers, according to Friese. Hydrating hyaluronic acid conditions the hairs, while biotin promotes growth. Per the brand, the best results can be seen after 90 days, though they do offer a complete money-back guarantee if you aren’t totally satisfied with the product. This is a great pick for contact wearers and individuals with sensitive eyes who are weary of products irritating their peepers. Since it’s been vetted by derms and has 28,000 positive reviews, you can rest assured this growth serum will coax stubborn brow hairs back into place without discomfort. Active Ingredients: Hyaluronic acid, biotin | Size: 3 milliliters | Dosage: Once daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Expert-recommended Good for sensitive skin Super conditioning Innovative applicator What We Don't Like Could be more product in the container “This contains ingredients that I can stand by, such as peptides, lipids, biotin, and green tea extract, which is rich in panthenol to condition and strengthen brows,” says Friese. She also applauds it for being non-irritating and vegan, as well as free of both parabens and phthalates. The product garners rave reviews from satisfied users, too, who note that while it takes some time, it does, in fact, work. After testing it at home, we also noticed that, unlike spoolie applicators that only coat the hairs, the felt tip on this wand conditions the skin underneath, giving you even more opportunity for hair regrowth. Although this option is a bit pricier than others on this list, we think the clean formula that won’t irritate skin justifies the spend, especially if you have sensitive skin. If you’re going for fuller brows, swipe RevitaBrow on patches where there isn’t much going on; you’ll start to see regrowth eventually. Another perk? Men can use it to enhance sideburns, beards, and goatees. Active Ingredients: Biotin, peptides | Size: 3 milliliters | Dosage: Once daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Promises to work quickly Unique, dual-sided comb applicator Creates healthier, stronger brows What We Don't Like Some reviewers note uneven hair growth You’ve likely heard of biotin as a superstar ingredient in many oral and topical hair health products; the B vitamin works similarly well for your brows. Alongside biotin, there’s also a potent protein complex full of amino acids, keratin, and peptides to keep your brows strong and healthy rather than sparse and fragile. FYI, while most brow growth serums are meant to be used once a day, at night, this one should be used morning and night. Although some reviewers note that hair growth was uneven, we vouch for this biotin-based formula in particular. If your brows are not only thin but often breaking, NeuBROW promises to get them in stronger shape while helping hair grow. Active Ingredients: Biotin, amino acids, peptides | Size: 6 milliliters | Dosage: Twice daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Rosemary leaf extract helps darken hair Natural formula Adds luster and shine What We Don't Like No included applicator, must apply with fingers It can be tricky to find a completely clean version of a brow serum, but this one fits the bill. The ingredient list touts a litany of good-for-your hair (and skin) oils; think antioxidant-rich argan and castor oils to help promote healthier, stronger, fuller brows. There’s also caffeine in the mix to help stimulate hair follicles. All you have to do is massage a drop or two into each brow for 20 to 30 seconds. If your brows are lighter than you would like—all over or in a few areas—you’re in luck. Rosemary leaf extract naturally darkens hair while phytosterols and essential fatty acids nourish and thicken. Active Ingredients: Argan oil, castor oil, caffeine | Size: 30 milliliters | Dosage: Once daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Works on lashes and brows Untinted Can be used under mascara when used on lashes What We Don't Like Doesn’t contain biotin For those looking for a product that can pull double duty to revitalize both brows and lashes, try this multitasker. It’s specially formulated with a combo of plant-based pea peptides plus castor oil and works equally well on lashes and brows. It’s also fragrance-free, vegan, and made with 96% naturally derived ingredients. Reviewers noticed longer, denser lashes in two weeks and too-thin eyebrow tails thickening after consistent use. Are you a fan of two-in-one products? This peptide-packed serum enriches your brows and lashes at the same time while strengthening already-existing fragile hairs. Active Ingredients: Pea peptides, castor oil | Size: 15 milliliters | Dosage: Once daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Works on lashes and brows Non-drippy formula Water-based & safe for lash extensions What We Don't Like Use twice daily Biotin, peptides, and keratin are the stars of the show in this dual-purpose formula. A major hit on Amazon, it consistently pulls in glowing, positive reviews. Users rave about the impressive results for both lashes and brows, lauding both how quickly and how well it works. They also repeatedly point out the texture of the formula—lightweight enough to not feel heavy, yet still thick enough that it doesn’t drip or get messy. FYI, this one does need to be used twice daily for best results. This serum is great for anyone who bases their beauty purchases around Amazon reviews. In addition to the hundreds of positive ratings praising its ability to sprout hairs in dormant places, several also call out how long their lashes looked after frequent use. Active Ingredients: Biotin, peptides, keratin | Size: 5 milliliters | Dosage: Twice daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Works on lashes and brows Shine inducing High dosage of keratin peptides What We Don't Like Reviewers say it can irritate sensitive skin Broadly speaking, eyebrow growth serums are a pretty pricey product category, making this more affordable option all the more noteworthy. Despite its wallet-friendly price tag, it still contains many of the same effective ingredients as its more expensive counterparts—peptides, panthenol, and plant-based extracts. Brush on the clear formula twice per day, and the brand says you should start to see the effects in as little as 60 days, a claim many happy Amazon reviewers back up when it comes to an improvement in both brows and lashes; the formula works on both, giving you even more bang for your buck. If you’re interested in testing an eyebrow growth serum, but don’t want to invest more than $25 doing so, this serum is a smart buy. Active Ingredients: Peptides, botanicals | Size: 7.5 milliliters | Dosage: Twice per day for 60 days, then once daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Celebrity brow artist-created Black-owned brand 100% vegan What We Don't Like Has a click applicator that can over-dispense serum After 20 years of testing every eyebrow growth product on the market with minimal results, Hollywood’s “Eyebrow King,” Damone Roberts, says he went into the lab armed with his personal knowledge to create his own: Brow Gain. The brow guru, who has shaped the brows of A-listers like Madonna, Oprah, and Beyoncé, developed this 100% vegan that’s powered by proteins, peptides, vitamins, and moisturizers, which he swears strengthen and improve the overall appearance of even the thinnest, most over-tweezed brows. Coupled with advanced hair therapy to not only condition the remaining hairs left but stimulate new follicle growth, his product is especially useful. Brown Gain is ideal for anyone searching for a vegan, natural alternative. With loads of positive reviews on Amazon touting Roberts’ serum as a game-changing solution, we love that people said they saw results in as little as two to four weeks. Active Ingredients: Zinc, peptides | Size: 2 milliliters | Dosage: Apply 2 clicks to brows morning and night or 1 click per eye to clean lash line | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like Luxe packaging Jumbo-sized tube for more applications Works on lashes and brows What We Don't Like Can be slightly tricky getting the brush out While many of the picks on our vetted list work overtime to fluff up skinny brows and elongate lashes, Hyperboost has a dual-ended brush and spoolie that make multitasking a bit easier. Use the brush tip to apply the product to brows morning and night, then brush through with the bristle side or swipe a coat of serum along your lash line as the last step in your nighttime routine. Its clinically-proven formula promises to improve lash volume by three times within 15 days, thanks to its powerhouse blend of peptides and provitamin B5, plus plant-based growth factors that revive weak brows and lashes. Another thing we love about this ophthalmologist-tested product is that it’s made without hormones and prostaglandin that can harm the eyes. If you’re keen on growing your lashes and your brows at the same time, this is an all-in-one tool that simplifies the process. Hyperboost is also a bargain, considering it’s double the size of most eyebrow growth serums, and its two-in-one applicator allows you to target each section of hair more precisely. Active Ingredients: Peptides, castor oil | Size: 7.6 milliliters | Dosage: Morning and night for brows or nightly for lashes | Cruelty-Free: Yes What We Like 2-in-1 anti-aging formula Reishi extract supports hair repair and reduces breakage Safe for lash extensions What We Don't Like Not ideal for sleeping since it can take a while to dry Thanks to patented reishi mushroom extract, rare antioxidants, and amino acids, Sagano is considered to be the superfood serum in the eyebrow growth world. It also nourishes stressed strands with a lipid blend that encourages hair growth while preventing breakage. A super-fine brush is ideal for swiping across your lash line for fuller fringe or targeting smaller bald spots in your brows without depositing product where you don’t want it, and loyal fans love the fact that it’s safe to use on eyelash extensions. Anyone who may have overplucked back in the day and is looking to fill in sparse sections, not totally transform their current brow shape, check this out. Active Ingredients: Biotin, amino acids, caffeine | Size: 3 milliliters | Dosage: Twice daily for two months, then daily | Cruelty-Free: Yes Our overall best eyebrow growth serum is the Vegamour VegaBROW Eyebrow Volumizing Serum, as it was recommended by three of the experts we tapped for this story. We love its combo of effective ingredients and appreciate the easy-to-use, doe-foot applicator. If you're looking for a great wallet-friendly option, we found the Organys Lash and Brow Serum formula effective and reasonably priced. To compile this list, our team of editors and contributors spent hours researching the best eyebrow growth serums on the market and evaluating their key features. After chatting with trichologists, brow artists, fellow Byrdie writers and contributors, and diving into reviews online, we crowned the best brow growth serums money could buy. Attributes we judged eyebrow growth serums on: FAQ How do eyebrow growth serums work? As long as the one you choose contains the right types of active ingredients, they can work by both helping to promote new growth and strengthen the existing hairs to prevent natural shedding or breakage, says Sacks. The big caveat? You need to use one regularly (usually either once daily or twice daily, depending on the formula) and be patient in order to see results, as it can take months. Experts and reviewers say the Grande Cosmetics GrandeBROW Brow Enhancing Serum tends to work on the faster end of the spectrum. Can you use eyelash growth serum on eyebrows? Generally speaking, yes, says Sacks, as lash and brow serums do contain many of the same ingredients. (Hence why there are so many products created as two-in-ones.) Plus, if you’re using one dedicated to lashes, you know it will be gentle enough to use on places other than the eye area. How long do brow growth serums take to see results? According to Vincent, growth serums can take up to three months for results to fully be seen—but that’s if you’re diligent about applying the product every day and in some cases, twice a day. “For sparse or thinning brows, I recommend using a growth serum as part of your nighttime routine, so it won’t interfere with makeup application or longevity,” she says. “Keep it on your nightstand with a mirror and try to commit to nightly application, as the results really do depend on consistent use.” Once you’ve achieved your desired results, Vincent notes you can scale back on usage and apply it every other day for maintenance. It’s also worth mentioning that once you discontinue using it altogether, your hair will slowly return to its prior state. Can you use a growth serum on tinted eyebrows? Technically, yes, although you shouldn’t apply growth serums to freshly-tinted brows. Kathryn Winokur, the founder & CEO of Hally, who just launched a line of temporary brow tints called Brow Pal, says brow tints, in general, should be applied to freshly clean brows and then, once set after 10-20 minutes, wiped clean. Once dry, after an hour or so, brow growth serums can be applied as normal. Can you regrow brow hair in your 40s and 50s? While Roberts admits that aging is a key factor that slows down the process of being able to sprout new hairs later in life, along with years of overwaxing and plucking, it is in fact possible—but with regular eyebrow growth serum use. “Everyone is different, but we’ve seen many 50 and beyond get positive results,” he says. Dr. Saedi says that consistency is key when it comes to growing out sparse or overplucked eyebrows, so it's best to find a product or treatment that you'll be motivated to use every day. Byrdie contributor Melanie Rud has over a decade of experience in the beauty industry, writing for some of the biggest magazines and websites out there. She’s worked hard to get her brows healthy and full after a brief stint of overzealous waxing during high school and relies on many of these brow growth serums throughout that process. She’s currently rotating between the NeuBrow and RevitaBrow options on this list. Kelli Acciardo is a freelance writer at Byrdie. She covers all things beauty and fashion-related, but her favorite topic is how to get your best-ever brows, which she believes truly frame the face. She leans on growth serums, tints, and pencils to perfect hers and is currently loving RevitaBrow on this list.
