The day I Met Tom Moylan

Origin: Paddy Carty_Traditional irish Music
Transcription: Gian Marco Pietrasanta

It’s very much like The Man of the House - but with just enough nuances to make it a different tune.

Tom

So does anyone know who this “Tom Moylan” is?

Would anyone like to post in abc the Liz and Yvonne Kane version of this tune? They have a slightly different B part than the one I have learned. Will, maybe? ;o)

I’ve never heard Kane sisters playing this tune, but some people play Paddy O’Brien’s version of this tune in Dm, which has a little bit different second part.

I found Paddy O’Brien’s version of the tune in Dm is available at JC’s ABC tune finder. I guess Kane sisters play almost identical version. Sorry, if not.

Kane Sisters version

Andee, here’s the rough draft of what Liz and Yvonne play for the opening time through the tune. I haven’t listened to this as much as I usually do with a tune before playing it back, so I’m undoubtedly missing some stuff. But it’ll get you started.

Er, that would be X: 1, T: Man of the House. It’s late, I’m asleep, just not in bed….

Yeah, that’s Paddy O‘Brien version. Will’s transcription is almost identical to what Devin McCabe trascribed from Paddy O’Brien’s playing.

Thanks loads Will and Slainte!! Can’t wait to get started on learning this setting….!

Andee, I didn’t do anything. All the thanks to Will. I don’t know why, but the Dm setting is played more often in Leeds, Yorkshire. Whenever I hear it, I say “damn!” in my head. I mean “what a nice version!” and “no, you should play Em one for flautists.”

For fiddlers at least, it’s definitely worth knowing both the Em and Dm settings of this tune.

The day i met tom moylan

tom moylan was my father he died in 1978 he owned moylans pub in loughrea co galway it is still in our family
he and paddy carty were good friends my father played the bodhran

Another Tom Moylan tune

Welcome to the site , Sean. There’s another fine tune which mention’s your father’s name - “Tom Moylan’s Frolic” ! Joe Burke recorded it on one of his “Outlet” label recordings in the 70s, and it was also recorded a few years back by Fermanagh flute/whistle player Larry Nugent. I’ll post it in the next few days.
I reckon if you played the reel Gian Marco’s posted, 99% of Irish musicians would call it “The Man Of The House”. It looks to me as if Paddy Carty’s been up to a bit of mischief, and renamed the tune to give your father a mention. That’s my theory , anyway Good luck.
P.S. - a shot in the dark. There are 2 LP covers of “Outlet” LPs by Joe Burke solo and also with Sean Maguire which were taken in a pub. Wouldn’t have been Moylan’s by any chance?

Going on a Stroll with the Man of the House

So I’ve been tinkering with this one lately on fiddle and tenor banjo, enjoying some minor melodic detours, and this is where I keep returning to:

The B part also comes out like this:

| efge fa{b}af | gfed ef g/g/a | bg{a}gf gfed | B/c/d BA GEFD ||

Set?

i was wondering what tunes night go good with this in a set. i was thinking maybe drowsy maggie? any other suggestions? what do other ppl play?

Set

Coolfin plays “Miss Monaghan” before this reel, which makes a nice set. How about “Bird in the Bush” or “Within a Mile of Dublin” after it? If you play pipes, “Jenny’s Wedding” might be a better choice.

Dm Version

Paddy O’Brien actually recorded it with James Kelly and Daithi Sproule. It’s just superb.

A fine day indeed

I learned this rockin’ version from Denis Lanctot. I love the way the rolls make it percolate along in the fiddle’s low register playing it in A dorian.

Don’t really see why this is a separate tune from Man Of The House. If you started this at any session, people would join in and play Man Of The House regardless, and would probably take the p*ss if you tried to convince them these were anything other than slightly different settings of the same tune.

I agree. Very nice version and nice title, but this is Man of the House.

And why is Paddy O‘Brien and Kane Sisters’ version of the tune in Dm posted in the comment space? It’s much more different. https://thesession.org/tunes/222/comments

There is a rousing version of this tune played by the “house” musicians at Oliver St. John Gogarty’s on the CD “Gogarty’s-A Pecade On.” It’s played as an instrumental break in the middle of the ballad “Molly Bawn”

I do a set of this, Rakish Paddy and the Flogging. It’s like it gradually lifts in mood..

A version by the Corrs

There is a version of this reel on the Talk on Corners’ album. It’s in the #10 tune (“Paddy McCarty”). Unfortunately, these version isn’t very good….

An obvious set is with “woman of the house”

How much more different a tune must be in order not to be considered a duplication, slainte? Much much more very different than that one, I would say!

Re: The Man Of The House

Really nice reel. I think it transitions well into Come West Along the Road (in G).
