Kaduri KKL, Eucalyptus gomphocephala 'Kaduri KKL' hybrid

Unmistakable in appearance, the Eucalyptus is commonly thought of as a tree with grey-green leaves, an open head, and often bark which, on trees of 5+ years, is shredded annually. However some species are in fact shrubs. Juvenile plants produce round or oval leaves, much used in flower arrangements. Older plants produce lance shaped leaves. Most species are tender however some can tolerate light frost and others, temperatures as low as -20C. All are thirsty plants, fast-growing, and aromatic. The 'Kaduri KKL' hybrid is a very unique hybrid which was propagated from cuttings of eucalyptus gomphocephala that grew into bush-like trees only 1.5 - 2 meters tall. Now frequently used as a hedging plant.

Kaempferia galanga, Lesser Galanga

Galangal is a root in the ginger family. It looks similar to ginger, although a little paler in colour, but the flavour is more spicy and pungent than ginger, and it is harder to grow, as it requires quite specific conditions. Galangal is very sensitive to frost, and is susceptible to rotting if water-logged. It is a tropical plant, and so in temperate climes is best suited to being grown in a container indoors. Lesser galanga is a small, stemless rhizomatous plant growing up to 45cm with thick, rounded leaves that form a rosette lying on the ground

Kaempferia Parviflora, Thai black ginger

Black Galangal is a root in the ginger family. It is sensitive to frost, and is susceptible to rotting if water-logged. It is a tropical plant, and so in temperate climes is best suited to being grown in a container indoors. The leaves are like hosta leaves and the orchid-like flowers, which are borne near the base of the plant, are small, white and streaked with dark-red veining.

Kahli Ginger Lily, Hedychium gardnerianum

Ginger Lilies are flowering, perennial, rhizomatous plants with stout, reed-like stems which carry lanceolate sheathing leaves in two parallel ranks. The stems are topped with spikes of orchid-like flowers that are often fragrant. Gingers vary from frost hardy, to tender green-house or conservatory plants, and protection from cold will help even hardy varieties to flower, so a solution in cold areas is to grow in containers, and move the containers outdoors in the warmer months. Wet conditions are sometimes a worse enemy than cold, so make sure the plants are going to be protected from very wet conditions, and that the soil in which they are grown is very free-draining. 'Hedychium gardnerianum' grows up to 2m, and bears "bottlebrush"-type clusters of fragrant, lemon-yellow flowers with prominent red stamens in late Summer to early Autumn

Kahmir Cypress, Cupressus Cashmeriana

Cypress is native to mainly warm temperate regions in the Northern Hemisphere. It is a conifer with needle-like juvenile leaves on young seedlings up to a year old, and scale-like adult leaves. The foliage grows in flat sprays. Many species are grown as ornamental trees with a variety of cultivars available with different traits from dwarf varieties to golden foliage. Cupressus cashmeriana is a conical-shaped tree that gets broader with age. It bears long, flat, pendulous sprays of glaucous blue scale-like leaves

Kaka Beak, Clianthus maximus

Clianthus puniceus - Red Lobster Claw - is an evergreen climber with 6in pinnate leaves with 13 - 25 leaflets. The flowers are bright and shaped like a lobster's claw - hence the common name. The plant can tolerate a little frost in a sheltered location, and can partially lose its leaves with no long term ill effect. However, in more frost-prone areas, it is best grown indoors or in the greenhouse. Clianthus maximus is a large Red Lobster Claw - bigger plant, bigger flowers and "biggger" colour!

Kalanchoe, Kalanchoe

The perennial Kalanchoes are cultivated as houseplants or rock or succulent garden plants. They have low water requirements, a wide variety of colours and are easy to propagate. New plants develop vegetatively as bulbils. These young plants eventually drop off and take root.

Descoings in IHSP, 2003: Greyish perennials to 25 cm tall, completely glabrous, rooting and branching at the base.http://www.crassulaceae.ch/de/artikel?akID=68&aaID=2&aiID=A&aID=3672 This is a slow growing succulent tree-like shrub which typically grows to about 1.5m tall with an equal spread. It has thick stems that hold large, undulated and folded, olive-green, slightly-triangular leaves covered in soft brown hairs that gives the leaves a soft, velvety texture. Once mature, it produces small yellow flowers in winter. The perennial Kalanchoes are cultivated as houseplants or rock or succulent garden plants. Kalanchoe Beauverdii, Kalanchoe 'Beauverdii'

as per ICN Description (by B. Descoings in IHSP, 2003) :Climbers, entirely glabrous.Stems slender, weak, procumbent, climbing with support, prolifically branched, woody-wiry below, several meters long.Leaves with numerous easily caducous bulbils on the teeth, very thick, succulent, sessile to subsessile or shortly petiolate, green, ± streaked with purple, usually with waxy bloom, very variable in shape and size, linear, narrowly spatulate, hastate, ovate to oblong, sometimes trilobate-hastate, 1.5 - 11 x 0.3 – 4 cm, tip acute, base slightly amplexicaul, margins entire or with some minute teeth in the apical 1/4.Inflorescences lax few-flowered cymes, pedicels 0.6 - 4 cm.FIowers pendent, calyx yellow-green, ± tinged purple, tube 1 – 10 x to 12 mm in diameter, sepals triangular, acute, 7 - 13 x 6.9 – 8,2 mm, corolla campanulate, pale green to grey-green streaked with red-purple, tube 11 - 33 mm,petals ovate to subcircular, acute, 12 - 17 x 8 - 19 mm.Cytology : n = 17Kalanchoe beauverdii is an extremely variable species, even within populations. This variability is the reason for the numerous synonyms. The perennial Kalanchoes are cultivated as houseplants or rock or succulent garden plants.
