While Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole is a side dish you may expect as a holiday recipe, you can serve it any day. This easy vegetable casserole is a great side dish for any family meal.

I love that this side dish recipe only takes six ingredients. This recipe has been a holiday classic for over 60 years.

One thing you will notice that is different between the Campbell's Green Bean Casserole and the French's Green Bean Casserole is the soy sauce. You can leave the soy sauce out if you do not like the flavor, but it adds some depth to the recipe's flavors.

I read that 20 million families serve this classic green bean casserole for the holidays. It is a staple on so many family holiday tables.

The original name for Campbell's Green Bean Casserole was Green Bean Bake.

Dorcas Reilly, a woman who worked in the Campbell test kitchen in the 1950s, invented this recipe. I love that the original recipe card is in the National Inventors Hall of Fame.

This classic recipe is one of our favorite side dishes for Thanksgiving dinner.

Ingredients

Here is a quick overview of the simple ingredients needed to make an epic Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole! The printable recipe card at the bottom of the post includes specific measurements and step-by-step instructions.

Green beans - You can use 2 cans of 14.5 oz canned green beans drained, 16 to 20 oz of frozen green beans that have been thawed, or 1.5 pounds of fresh green beans. We like to use cut cooked green beans from a can but you can use any type of green beans that you have available.

Bacon - If you want to give this a bit of a meatier flavor you can add in a couple of slices bacon to the green bean mixture.

Campbell's Cream of Mushroom Soup - If your family is not a fan of cream of mushroom soup you can easily switch this for the cream of chicken or other varieties.

Soy Sauce - You can omit the soy sauce if you are not a fan of it.

Milk - The heavier the milk you use the creamier your casserole will be.

French's French Fried Onions - I buy a bigger container than what I am going to need for this recipe. My husband loves to snack on these fried onions and there have been a few times I have gone to sprinkle with the remaining fried onions only to find the container a lot emptier than I planned on it being.

Additional ingredients

You can stir in ½ cup of shredded cheddar cheese to make this recipe even richer and perfect for cheese lovers.

For a fun Christmas festive touch look stir in ¼ cup chopped red peppers.

If you want a bit of crunch you can add in ¼ cup of toasted almonds.

Equipment Needed

  • 1.5-quart casserole dish - This is equal to a 9x9 baking dish. You can use a larger casserole dish but the green bean casserole will spread out and you may need more fried onions.
  • Heat resistant potholders - A couple of years ago we had a fire scare when we didn't realize we had turned a burner on and a cloth potholder caught fire. Thankfully we walked by the kitchen and saw the smoke and were able to get it out ourselves. Since then we have only used these heat-resistant potholders.

Preparation and Storage

Make Ahead: You can make this recipe a day or two ahead of time to save time during the holidays. Prep it to right before baking. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and store it in the fridge. Add French Fried Onions before you bake the Campbell’s Green Bean Casserole, as they’ll get soggy if left on top of the unbaked casserole.

Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container and enjoy them within three days.

Freezing/How to Freeze: Southern Living does not recommend freezing green bean casserole, as its sauce may break when thawed.

How to Reheat: Here’s a fantastic guide to reheating green bean casserole using your stove, microwave, or stovetop!

Recipe Variations

Substitutions:

You can use two cans of 14.5 oz drained green beans, 16 to 20 oz thawed frozen green beans, or 1.5 pounds of fresh green beans. We like to use cooked and cut green beans from a can, but you can use any type of green beans that you have available.

If your family is not a fan of cream of mushroom soup, you can easily switch to cream of chicken or other varieties.

Vegetarian Option: This holiday casserole recipe is 100 percent vegetarian!

Vegan Option: Vegans should use a plant-based alternative to cream of mushroom soup, milk, and French-fried onions to make this recipe vegan. Here’s why French’s Fried Onions are vegetarian but not vegan.

Gluten-Free: French’s Fried Onions are gluten-free! Gluten-free eaters should use gluten-free cream of mushroom soup and soy sauce to make this holiday green bean casserole gluten-free.

Alcohol-Free Option: We don’t use alcohol in this recipe, but this Green Bean Casserole recipe uses dry white wine if you’re considering a boozy take on this classic Thanksgiving side dish!

Smaller Serving Size + Larger Group/More Servings: The written recipe makes six servings. Scale it up or down to your desired yield, keeping in mind that you may need to work in batches according to your slow cooker’s capacity if you scale up!

Make It Spicy: Add a few dashes of cayenne or chipotle powder for a green bean casserole with a kick!

Sugar-Free: The written recipe contains 8 grams of sugar per serving. Use green beans and cream of mushroom soup with no sugar added to make it sugar-free.
